Drive 05
In the Summer of 2005 all 6 of the Laster’s loaded up in a newly painted 1966 Volkswagen Westfalia Bus and simply headed west. This is their story.
Preface
The original plan was to leave on Friday after work. I would simply drive home from work with a bus loaded to the gills with supplies and no passengers. That plan went, umm, awry to put it nicely. I had spent the previous weeks working long and hard on giving Butch a new paint job. I had succeeded with the paint. The end of the week brought me closer to the realization that I was not going to have all my interior bits back in the bus by then. The schedule quickly got slid to Saturday morning. Mid Saturday morning the schedule was slid again to whenever I was finished with the rest. After quite a filling visit to Mazatlan for some much needed family time away from the bus I finished up Saturday evening. For those who wondered why it could take me so long to re-install an interior back in I thought I might elaborate a bit. All of our previous trips taught me that we have a lack of some well laid out interior storage. I decided kind of last minute that I would build some cabinets that suited out purpose. All told I built three cabinets Friday night and Saturday morning. One to replace the useless icebox. Another to fill the empty space on the drivers side at the rear. A final one over the rear bed. We will just have to see how that last one works out, it is after all called a “head banger” cabinet.
After all was built and installed the actual packing really didn’t take that long. Only a few hours spend and we were ready to head out about 8ish that night. It was decided that instead of just heading out quickly we would catch a quick nap and be on the road early Sunday morning. I’m pretty sure I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. The next thing I knew it was early AM.
